Pep Guardiola has a ‘feeling’ Vincent Kompany will manage Manchester City in the future
- Vincent Kompany played 360 times for Man City
- He now manages Bayern Muinich
- Pep Guardiola backs him for the City job
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has backed former club captain Vincent Kompany to one day return to the Etihad Stadium as his successor.
Bayern Munich manager Kompany played well over 300 games for City in a glittering career that saw him win four Premier League titles, four EFL Cups and two FA Cups.
Since retiring as a player, the 40-year-old has moved into management. Starting at boyhood club Anderlecht, he then guided Burnley, who host City on Wednesday, to promotion from the Championship,
Now at Bayern, Kompany has won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and guided the Bavarian outfit to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Pep Guardiola tips Kompany to be Manchester City manager
Belgian legend Kompany has earned plenty of plaudits for his impressive managerial record, including from Pep Guardiola.
The Catalan boss praised his former captain for the work he’s done in a short time in Germany, and tipped him to one day return to Manchester as City manager.
Guardiola told Hayters TV: “He’s so young, still just one or two years in Munich, so still [he] will be there.
“But sooner or later, I have the feeling, just in case he decides in a certain moment to come back to England, I’m pretty sure Manchester will be in his heart and mind, and hopefully the path will cross at a certain point in his life.”
Pep congratulates ‘extraordinary’ Bayern Munich
Discussing Bayern’s success under Kompany, Guardiola praised both the club and the manager for their performances across this season.
The Catalan coach spent three seasons at Bayern as a manager, winning consecutive Bundesliga titles from 2014-2016.
Guardiola continued: “Well, I’d say not bad at all. Congratulations, of course, Vinny and Bayern Munich; a place I was, I have a lot of friends.
“Again they show high, high quality and entertaining football, with a lot of goals and actions. I know people are so happy in Munich, they won again the Bundesliga.
“Just a huge congratulations for the whole organisation from Bayern because it’s extraordinary. Really, really extraordinary club, well-managed on the sidelines, the board, all the people, to the fans. And now, ready for the Champions League semi-finals. I wish him all the best.”
Will we see Vincent Kompany as Man City manager one day?
It would be a romantic homecoming for Kompany if he one day returned to the Etihad as Man City manager.
The former captain is already a legend at City, and his appointment would be welcomed by the vast majority of fans.
Football is not always simple, though. Having just signed a new, long-term contract, Kompany is set to stay at Bayern until at least 2029.
With Guardiola’s future uncertain, it feels unlikely the current boss would stay at City until then. The timing of Pep’s departure may therefore not line up with Kompany’s availability.
However, there does feel like a sense of inevitability surrounding an eventual return to the club of one of its favourite sons.
