- Jamie Carragher praises Kevin De Bruyne’s passing
- Calls him Man City’s best ever player
- Also waxes lyrical over Yaya Toure
Jamie Carragher has heaped praise on two Manchester City legends, describing one as a cheat code and the other as the club’s greatest player.
Pep Guardiola is looking to build a team who can restore Manchester City to their glory days, after a trophyless season last time out.
During the current campaign, City have won the Carabao Cup and there is still a chance to win the domestic treble. However, Arsenal are still in the Premier League driving seat, at least for now.
Even if the Citizens do make a major success out of this season, most would still agree that the current squad is missing the unique talent Guardiola possessed in times past.
Jamie Carragher calls Kevin De Bruyne Man City’s best ever player
Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher discussed a player who helped Man City to a number of titles – Kevin De Bruyne.
The retired defender branded De Bruyne as City’s ‘greatest player of all time’, claiming he helped them beat Liverpool to multiple trophies.
“I think he’s the best passer of the ball I’ve seen in the Premier League,” Carragher said of De Bruyne.
“I mean, there’s some great players out there who other people may argue. But some of the assists he used to have for Manchester City…
“That Jurgen Klopp Liverpool team should’ve won a lot more. For how good the team was, I think he’s the difference. Liverpool didn’t have him, or that type of player in the midfield,” Carragher continued.
“So for me he was the difference and I go back to that game against Aston Villa, the last game of the season where Man City are 2-0 down.
“I think Liverpool have just got a goal at home against Wolves or something. And Kevin De Bruyne just basically turns it on and Manchester win a league title.
“And I think for me, he is Manchester City’s greatest player of all time.”
De Bruyne helped Man City dominate
Man City are often said to have had a fierce rivalry with Klopp’s Liverpool and in fairness, the Catalan boss has spoken highly of the former Reds head coach.
However, during his time in Merseyside, he only won one Premier League title. In the same period of time, Guardiola won six with City.
De Bruyne played such an important role, orchestrating attacks with his tremendous vision and execution.
With 108 goals and 177 assists recorded during his time at the Etihad Stadium, it is clear to see just how much of an impact the Belgian made.
Carragher calls Yaya Toure a cheat code
De Bruyne was not the only ex-Citizen to receive plaudits from Carragher ahead of Manchester United’s defeat to Leeds.
Indeed, he also spoke about Yaya Toure, who played alongside De Bruyne for three years during his time with the Sky Blues.
“He was almost like a cheat code, I felt for a few years for Manchester City,” Carragher added. “And it wasn’t just central midfield, a lot of times he used to just go into that number 10 position.
“And all the players, they’re absolutely amazing players, world class players, he was the one more than most, who almost felt like he was a man playing a kid’s game.
“When he used to run past him I don’t think anybody could stop it. It was some sight seeing him go from that midfield position.
“I actually remember him playing, I think he played centre-back in a Champions League final against Manchester United when he was at Barcelona.”
Toure was another special talent and liked to play from box-to-box. Elliot Anderson is by no means an identical type of player, but he does possess that type of versatility, which means it unsurprising that he is one of City’s top transfer targets this summer.
