  • City’s ex-financial adviser thinks he could soon leave the club

Manchester City’s former financial advisor has given his verdict on when Rodri is likely to depart his current club.

Rodri’s future at Manchester City is very much up in the air at the moment. His contract expires next year and recently the Spaniard appeared to approve a move to Real Madrid.

However, Rodri criticised the interview clip which linked him with a move away from Man City, due to the heavy editing which changed the context of his comments.

It is therefore difficult to determine where the 29-year-old will be playing his football next season, but Man City’s ex-financial advisor has made an interesting prediction.

Rodri could leave Man City this summer

According to Stefan Borson, it is ‘inevitable’ that Rodri is being linked with a move away from Man City. This is mainly due to his age, but there are other factors to consider as well.

In fact, even if Rodri does remain at City, Borson believes he is only likely to commit to one more year at the club.

The ex-adviser told Football Insider: “This summer, a lot will depend on whether Real Madrid are prepared to pay let’s say £50 million, which I think is probably the level City would entertain.

“I think it’s inevitable, partly because he’s 30 [in June], so the reality is that the best that City could expect is a one-year extension perhaps.

“I don’t think it’s a major shock that he’s ready to return to Spain, especially after the injury and the intensity of the Premier League and the fact he’s won everything,” he continued.

“He’s 30 years old. With Rodri it doesn’t usually feel like he is 30 for some reason, but I think this is just a natural sort of time for him to consider his position.”

Man City must resolve Rodri’s contract situation

It has been reported that Man City want to renew Rodri’s contract. If this is truly the case, this needs to happen as soon as possible.

City simply have to know ahead of the summer if Rodri intends to remain at the club beyond next year, otherwise he will have to be sold.

Borson has revealed that the Carabao Cup winners could receive £50m by selling the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, so it would be a real blow losing him on a free.

Therefore, the option for the Citizens is either to renew Rodri’s contract before the summer transfer window opens, or to sell him once it has.
