Manchester City have decided on how they wish to handle Rodri’s situation, after he opened the door to a potential Real Madrid move.

Rodri has caused a storm out of nowhere at Manchester City, despite the fact he is away representing Spain in their March friendlies.

During a recent interview, Rodri refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid, while claiming he could not turn down a move from one of the best teams in the world.

There are no reports that the La Liga team have offered him a deal, but by the sound of it, the 29-year-old is very much interested in joining Los Blancos.

Man City want to keep Rodri

Rodri may be making plans for the future, but Man City have an agenda of their own which involves him remaining at the club.

According to journalist Kaveh Solhekol, City are quietly confident the midfielder will stay put and sign a new deal. In fact, he has even told the supporters of the Carabao Cup winners not to worry.

“What Man City will try and do is have talks with his representatives and get him to agree to sign a new contract,” Solhekol informed Sky Sports.

“He is such a key player for Man City, he is one of their best ever midfielders and one of the best we have ever seen play in this country.

“You do have to remember he has had a serious knee injury, which he has been recovering from. That is one of the reasons there haven’t been in-depth talks about extending his contract.

“It is interesting what he has had to say. It would’ve been easy to say he is on international duty and doesn’t want to talk about his club future,” the reporter continued.

“He said what privately a lot of players would say. It is very difficult to turn down a big club like Real Madrid if they come in for you.

“We have to retain a sense of perspective. Just because Real Madrid may want a player does not mean they will get him.

“We do know they are interested in signing a new midfielder this summer. I am sure Rodri is one of the players they will be looking at, they have also been linked with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo at Chelsea.”

Solhekol added: “They will have a lot of options. If I were a Man City fan, I wouldn’t be getting too worried. I think Man City do want to keep him and quietly, they are probably pretty confident they will get him to sign a new deal.”

Kaveh Solhekol is too optimistic about Man City’s chances

Realistically, Man City are going to have to work exceptionally hard in order to keep Rodri. It is quite absurd to suggest contract talks have not taken place because of an injury which he recovered from more than a year ago.

Just listen to the way Rodri is talking and it becomes very clear what his intentions are for the future. The 29-year-old wants to move back to Spain and Real Madrid are the club on his radar.

Rodri is not getting any younger, so if he is going to move to another European supergiant, it is bound to happen sooner rather than later.

Maybe Man City will get to work on agreeing a new deal with the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, but right now, saying he will probably remain at the Etihad Stadium is very questionable.
