Rodri ‘very excited’ for Carabao Cup final after reflecting on 2020 triumph

Rodri has reflected on the 2020 Carabao Cup final, when he scored to help Manchester City claim the victory over Aston Villa.

Manchester City had already won the Carabao Cup for two successive years when the 2019/20 final came along, but Rodri still has fond memories of the occasion.

Just weeks before chaos resulting from a global pandemic hit the UK, Man City lifted the trophy after defeating Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring and it was Rodri who bagged the second, which would ensure the Citizens walked away with another League Cup success under their belt.

Rodri is looking forward to another Carabao Cup final

With the 2025/26 final just days away, Rodri has sat down with the Carabao Cup to discuss his contribution in the 2020 fixture, while also looking ahead to this Sunday.

He said: “Well I have a very good memory because it was the first final I scored in so, yeah with header, it was six years ago and yeah, very excited to play another one.

“It was a game against [Aston] Villa, I remember [Jack] Grealish was there, we used to talk when he was here, but yeah, special moment because always Wembley, the crowds are there and it’s a special moment.”

Manchester City have won their seven most recent League Cup finals

There is certainly a reason for Rodri and his teammates to feel confident when looking back on past finals in the competition.

Man City have won each of the past seven Carabao Cup finals they have competed in, which includes a victory over Arsenal in 2017/18.

Whether by decisive victories or on penalty shootouts, City always seem to find a way to get the job done in this fixture and the aim will be the same this Sunday.
