The Carabao Cup final is fast approaching, so it is time to look at how Manchester City have fared against Arsenal in the last five meetings between the teams.
Arsenal are the favourites to win the League Cup this Sunday, based on the fact the North London club are top of the Premier League and remain in the Champions League.
However, anything can happen in a cup final and Man City will not exactly feel like underdogs, considering their history under Pep Guardiola.
Perhaps looking at the past five results between the two sides will give an indication of who is most likely to come out on top.
Manchester City’s five most recent fixtures against Arsenal
Arsenal 1-0 Manchester City – October 8, 2023
Man City were on a run of 12 successive Premier League victories over Arsenal, but the Gunners finally got their revenge through a late Gabriel Martinelli goal.
Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal – March 31, 2024
City were unable to defeat Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, but this draw was important, as they finished five points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s team that season.
Manchester City 2-2 Arsenal – September 22, 2024
Erling Haaland’s ninth minute opener was cancelled out by Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time. However, John Stones rescued a point for City in the 98th minute, keeping Arsenal winless in the league at the Etihad since 2015.
Arsenal 5-1 Manchester City – February 2, 2025
Martin Odegaard took the lead in the second minute, but Erling Haaland levelled the game in the 55th minute. However, the Gunners ran riot from that point onwards, picking up their biggest win over the Citizens since 2003.
Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City – September 21, 2025
Haaland’s ninth minute goal looked like it might be enough for Man City earlier in the season, but Martinelli struck back in stoppage time. This would go on to be one of many occasions where the Gunners have managed to get a result at the very end of a game.
The Carabao Cup final is likely to be a close call
Other than that one match at the Emirates Stadium last season, matches between Man City and Arsenal have tended to be fairly even contests.
City might not have beaten their upcoming opponent in a good while, but they technically do not have to in 90 minutes anyway.
It definitely feels like the kind of match which could go to extra time, or even penalties, as both teams will look to stay in the game.
Man City have learnt what not to do after a bruising Champions League tie against Real Madrid, so this is a chance to do things the right way.
