“I always wish the best for Man City”: Vincent Kompany reacts to his former club’s Champions League exit

Vincent Kompany has revealed his thoughts after avoiding a potential Manchester City reunion in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Manchester City have had some legendary players over the past couple of decades and Vincent Kompany is up there among the very best.

Kompany joined the club in 2008, just after a takeover which could dramatically change their fortunes for the coming years.

The defender quickly went from being an inexperienced player at Hamburg to a first-team starter at Man City, where he would eventually become a four-time Premier League winner.

However, Kompany’s loyalties now lie with Bayern Munich, meaning it would have been interesting if the teams had met in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Vincent Kompany was not thinking about Manchester City

Despite departing the Eithad Stadium seven years ago, Man City still hold a special place in Kompany’s heart.

Nevertheless, he was not thinking about the fact that Bayern would have faced City in the next round, had Pep Guardiola’s team defeated Real Madrid.

Kompany said in his press conference (as relayed by Bayern & Germany): “I always try to separate things. I always wish the best for Man City, it’s normal. I always want them to win anytime.

“It’s nothing to do with me. In this case I wasn’t thinking a lot about who we’re going to face. I was only thinking about Atalanta and reaching the next round. Now it’s Real Madrid. It’s a fantastic fixture for the club, the players and the fans”

Man City would have been tested against Bayern Munich

Even if Man City’s tie with Real Madrid had gone completely differently, there were still a number of obstacles preventing them from reaching the Champions League final.

Bayern would have been a big one, as the Bundesliga team have only lost one league game this season. On top of this, they have only been defeated once in Europe, which came at the Emirates Stadium.

Kompany’s team absolutely thrashed Atalanta in the last 16 and if City had progressed, it would have been difficult to overcome Bayern.
