Manchester City have defeated Newcastle United four times this season and the Magpies are looking for payback, but in the transfer market rather than on the pitch.
Ask a Newcastle fan about which team they hate playing the most and surely Manchester City will be their answer.
The Sky Blues knocked Newcastle out of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup and they also beat them in the Premier League last month.
Eddie Howe’s team are out looking for vengeance, but clearly competing with Man City on the pitch is not an option.
Therefore, Newcastle are taking a different approach, which can be achieved without even having to kick a ball.
Newcastle want to beat Man City to Elliot Anderson’s signature
It is no secret that Man City have been linked with Elliot Anderson and their interest will only have intensified after the midfielder scored against them earlier in the month.
However, Team Talk have reported that Newcastle are considering a move for the 23-year-old which could break the club’s transfer record.
Newcastle are more likely to act on Anderson if either Sandro Tonali or Bruno Guimarães departs and Man City and Man United are reportedly both interested in these midfielders.
Anderson could be tempted by his boyhood club
Joining Manchester City over Newcastle seems like a no-brainer at surface level, but Anderson could fancy a reunion with his former team.
This seems even more likely as the club’s sporting director Ross Wilson was key to convincing the player to switch Newcastle for Nottingham Forest two years ago.
Despite this, Newcastle are not even guaranteed a spot in Europe next season, while Man City will be playing in the Champions League.
Anderson has only ever played in European football’s biggest club tournament twice and both those appearances were made off the bench.
He has gotten a taste of the Europa League this season and now he may be looking to take the step back up, making Man City an attractive destination.
