Manchester City take on Liverpool this evening in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie at Anfield, with Pep Guardiola’s side hoping to produce a solid performance to carry forward into next week’s second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola’s side fell to a 4-3 league defeat back in January at Anfield, the scene of City’s only league defeat this season, but they will be hoping to have learned from their mistakes last time out.
Having come through 5-2 winners on aggregate in the round of 16 against Switzerland’s FC Basel, City remain one of the heavy favourites to go all the way and win the competition which sees the final held in Kiev, Ukraine.
With seven goals scored the last time the two sides met at Anfield back in January, tonight’s tie promises to be an exciting and unpredictable one.
Here is our predicted Manchester City starting XI ahead of tonight’s highly anticipated quarter-final clash against Liverpool:
Goalkeeper - Ederson
Ederson has been an ever present for City this season, displacing Claudio Bravo as Guardiola’s first choice goalkeeper.
Left-back - Aymeric Laporte
After transferring from Athletic Bilbao in the January transfer window for a reported fee of £57million, Laporte appears to have grabbed hold of the left-back shirt for City.
Centre-back - Vincent Kompany
Despite constantly suffering long spells on the side lines through injury, when fully fit, the Manchester City captain easily cements his place in the starting XI.
Centre-back - Nicolas Otamendi
Otamendi has been one of City’s unsung heroes this season and his highly likely to start alongside Kompany at the heart of the Manchester City defence.
Right-back -Kyle Walker
Kyle Walker has been arguably the best right-back in the Premier League this season, and has been a real coup for City since his arrival in the summer.
Centre midfielder - Fernandinho
The Brazilian has played in six of City’s Champions League fixtures this season and with Guardiola set to put out his strongest side, you’d have him down to feature again tonight.
Centre midfielder - Kevin De Bruyne
Front runner for City’s Player Of The Season award, De Bruyne has had an outstanding campaign and would be the first name on Guardiola’s team sheet.
Centre midfield - David Silva
One of the longest serving current Manchester City players, David Silva is another name who when fully fit can simply not be missing from City’s strongest starting XI.
Right wing - Raheem Sterling
Sterling has scored four goals in the Champions League for City this season and 21 in all competitions.
Left wing - Leroy Sane
Sane is another player who you would expect to be one of the first names on the team sheet for tonight’s game, having enjoyed some of his best football this season.
Centre forward - Gabriel Jesus
With Sergio Aguero out injured, it is most likely to fall to Brazilian starlet Gabriel Jesus to lead the line for City.
