Manchester City 2-1 Sunderland: Player Ratings

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League campaign got underway with the perfect start. An early Sergio Aguero penalty and a Paddy McNair own-goal sandwiching Jermain Defoe’s equalizer was enough to see City grab the 3 points.

New manager, new team, new kit, new badge and a new era. Celebrated with fireworks, flags and banners before kick-off, a sell-out crowd enjoyed the decorative spectacle that welcomed back English football.

Nolito and Stones debuted in an unpredictable City XI that saw Joe Hart dropped for Willy Caballero in an unpopular. With all things considered, yesterday’s win will go a long way. A disappointing preseason made City fans question how we would perform in the first couple of months and the busy schedule ahead reinforces how important the win was.

All in all, the perfect way to label the City team currently would be a ‘work in progress’. There were little snippets of brilliance but also vulnerability in defence, but once the system is all worked out City will be a joy to watch.

Here’s how I rated the players from yesterday’s performance…

matchday.
