Vincent Kompany has told Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea team he’s bringing with him to Manchester City on Sunday that they could have a fight on their hands for the weekend and for the rest of the season if City’s top players are ready to perform at their best again next season, as quoted by The Daily Mirror.
The Blues suffered a debilitating loss of their title last season, which saw Chelsea romp to the champions crown with an 8 point gap between the side dressed in dark blue and the side dressed in sky. Part of the reason was players like Kompany underperforming, but he believes their fortunes could be wildly different if those same underperformers are ready to better themselves, starting with the return to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Speaking prior to that game, the Belgium captain said “Our squad can become stronger just by getting everyone in the right direction.”
“We had so many players who just didn’t perform last season – and I was one of them. If they do perform this year, it will be like having six or seven new players. Then we will have a stronger squad.”
The defensive rock also praised the new players brought in by Manchester City this season, of whom there have been four; Enes Unal has already gone back out on loan.
“But new players like Raheem, Delph – from what I’ve seen – and Patrick Roberts too, they’ll give us something different, so many options.”
Kompany played the full game and scored with his shoulder as Manchester City romped to a 3-0 win at The Hawthorns on their opening day of the Premier League season, a win which saw them go top of the table.
