Wolfsburg have been publicly adamant all summer that they want to keep Kevin De Bruyne past the summer window, amid heavy interest from Manchester City, who want to make him their second most expensive player ever, behind Raheem Sterling. Now, manager Dieter Hecking has once again told Kicker as quoted by Goal that he thinks De Bruyne will stay, because City simply aren’t big enough.
Rumour has it that City are set to make a £46 million bid for Kevin De Bruyne in the coming days, with some even suggesting that they want to complete the deal as quickly as possible in order to put the Belgian in the squad for the first home game of the season against Chelsea, the midfielder’s former club.
However, Hecking is still reiterating his belief that De Bruyne won’t be departing this summer, saying “I expect Kevin to stay. With all due respect for Manchester City, it would be different if Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich made a move.”
“I would understand a departure then.”
However, the sporting director at Wolfsburg – Klaus Allofs – did concede that De Bruyne is interested in some of the clubs he’s being linked with, saying “I think that interested clubs have turned Kevin’s head a bit. We are talking about incredible sums here.”
“I understand that all this is on Kevin’s mind. He will have to listen to offers. We cannot expect him to just ignore those offers.”
“The transfer window remains open for three more weeks. Any interested clubs that still feel they have a chance of signing him will get involved.”
De Bruyne scored 10 times and assisted another 20 goals last season, earning him the Player of the Year award in Germany.
