Manchester City’s long-running financial case has again dominated the headlines, with fresh reports of concern among rival clubs over how long the appeal process could take.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has separately suggested the dispute could continue for years, while Javier Tebas has renewed his criticism of Manchester City. On the pitch, Enzo Maresca’s side are preparing for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa.
Here are the main Man City stories from Friday, October 23.
Premier League clubs reportedly concerned by City timetable
Rival Premier League clubs are reportedly growing frustrated over fears City’s financial case could remain unresolved beyond the end of the season.
City have appealed after an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 original charges brought against them by the Premier League. The club continue to deny wrongdoing and argue that the commission’s opinion contains material errors of law, principle and fact.
There is no publicly confirmed date for the appeal to be concluded, with the hearing taking place privately. Any sanction would be determined separately if City’s challenge to the verdict is unsuccessful.

Maguire predicts case could continue for ‘years’
Maguire believes the wider legal battle could continue for “not just months but years”, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding when English football will finally have a definitive outcome.
The football finance expert has also raised the possibility that mounting legal costs could eventually increase pressure to explore a negotiated settlement. There is no suggestion City and the Premier League are currently holding settlement talks, however, with Maguire outlining a possible future scenario rather than reporting negotiations between the parties.

Tebas calls for ‘justice’ after City verdict
LaLiga president Tebas has meanwhile renewed his criticism of City, calling for “justice” following the independent commission’s findings.
Tebas has been a prominent critic of City’s finances for several years and said he is interested to see how the case eventually concludes. He has no formal role in either City’s appeal or the Premier League’s disciplinary process, meaning his intervention represents an outside view rather than any indication of how the case will be resolved.

Haaland available as City head to Aston Villa
Attention returns to football on Saturday, when City face Aston Villa at Villa Park in a 12.30pm Premier League kick-off.
Erling Haaland is available after being an unused substitute for the 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens, while Phil Foden heads to Birmingham after scoring his first hat-trick in the competition. City have won all seven of their Premier League matches this season, but Villa are unbeaten in their past seven games in all competitions.

Saturday therefore gives City an opportunity to move the immediate focus back towards events on the pitch, even if the questions surrounding their financial case are unlikely to disappear.
