Premier League clubs reportedly ‘furious’ amid fresh Man City case concern

Premier League clubs are reportedly growing frustrated over fears City’s financial case could remain unresolved beyond the end of the season.

City have appealed after an independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-season period, as well as three of four alleged breaches relating to co-operation with the investigation.

City have challenged the commission’s decision and continue to dispute the case against them, leaving considerable uncertainty over both the eventual outcome and when the process will be completed. According to the Mirror, that uncertainty is now causing frustration among rival Premier League clubs.

Premier League clubs reportedly concerned by Man City timetable

The report claims there are fears among clubs that City’s appeal could run beyond the end of the current season, potentially leaving the Premier League without a final resolution when the campaign finishes. That would prolong a case which has already run for several years. The Premier League began its investigation in December 2018 before referring City to an independent commission in February 2023, with the subsequent hearing lasting 42 days and concluding in December 2024.

The commission’s findings were finally announced in September, with the Premier League saying City had committed serious financial breaches between 2009/10 and 2017/18. City formally appealed in October.

There is no publicly confirmed date for that appeal to be concluded. Proceedings are being held in private under Premier League rules, meaning reports concerning the possible timetable or outcome should be treated separately from information officially released by the league.

The question of sanction is also unresolved. The Premier League has confirmed that the commission has broad powers which can include fines, points deductions and other sporting sanctions, but no final punishment has been announced. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has separately suggested the wider battle could continue for “not just months but years”, illustrating the uncertainty surrounding the process rather than establishing a timetable for its conclusion.

For City’s rivals, the concern reported by the Mirror is therefore less about knowing what punishment will eventually be imposed and more about when English football will finally have an answer. Until the appeal and sanction processes have been completed, both remain unresolved.
