Vitor Reis makes senior Brazil debut in draw with Australia

Vitor Reis made his senior Brazil debut on Friday as Carlo Ancelotti’s side drew 1-1 with Australia in Townsville.

The 20-year-old Man City defender started alongside Brazil captain Marquinhos at centre-back and played 76 minutes before being replaced by Jair Cunha. It was Reis’ first senior cap after representing his country at youth level.

He was one of two Brazil debutants, with Matheuzinho also making his first senior appearance at right-back. Ancelotti had indicated before the game that the international window would allow him to look at some of Brazil’s younger players following the World Cup.

Australia made life difficult for Brazil at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium, although the visitors thought they had taken the lead shortly before half-time.

Estevao found the net, only for the goal to be disallowed following a VAR review. Australia then went ahead after 68 minutes when Nestory Irankunda scored from a free-kick.

Reis remained on for another eight minutes before Ancelotti made changes, with Jair Cunha taking his place in the Brazil defence.

Brazil were heading for defeat until the fifth minute of stoppage time. Raphinha delivered a corner and substitute Rayan headed home to rescue a 1-1 draw.

The result wasn’t what Brazil wanted, but Reis will remember the night for rather different reasons. His first senior international appearance comes after the defender returned to City this summer following his season-long loan spell with Girona.

Reis could now hope for further involvement when Brazil and Australia meet again in Brisbane on Tuesday.
