A claim that City’s owners are considering a £78m move to buy Colombian club Millonarios has been challenged by reports closer to the club.
Spanish-language football site Futbol de Inglaterra claimed on Thursday that City Football Group was considering an offer worth around £78m, which could bring Millonarios into its global network.
The story has since been repeated elsewhere, but there has been no confirmation from Man City, CFG or Millonarios that an offer has been made. Colombian journalist Guillermo Arango has now reported that Millonarios have not received an offer from City Football Group.
Another group is already in talks over Millonarios
There is interest in a possible change of ownership at Millonarios, although another investment group has been involved in that process. Kapital Football Group, linked to US-based DaGrosa Capital Partners, has been in discussions over a possible purchase and has reportedly secured a period of exclusivity to negotiate with the Colombian club.
Hugo Varela, vice-president of Kapital Football Group, was also recently pictured at El Campin for Millonarios’ game against Boyaca Chico as talks continued. That process doesn’t in itself rule out CFG becoming interested at some stage, but it leaves the viral £78m claim without the confirmation that would be expected if a bid had actually been submitted.
Any documented offer has not supported the figure itself. Colombian outlet El Deportivo also noted that the reports had produced no direct confirmation from CFG, Millonarios or those involved in the club’s ownership. City Football Group already has a significant presence in South American football through Bahia in Brazil and Montevideo City Torque in Uruguay.
Millonarios could therefore appear a plausible fit on paper. At present, though, there is no confirmed CFG offer for the Colombian club, and reports indicate another group is already engaged in negotiations.
