Chelsea consider January move for Man City defender

Chelsea are reportedly considering a January move for City defender Abdukodir Khusanov, just two months after he signed a new long-term contract at the Etihad.

Mark Brus reports for the Daily Briefing that Chelsea are among four Premier League clubs monitoring the Uzbekistan international ahead of the January transfer window.

Chelsea are said to be keeping a particularly close eye on Khusanov, with three other Premier League clubs also interested in the possibility of taking him on loan. There is no suggestion that Chelsea have made an approach or opened talks with City.

Khusanov signed new Man City deal this summer

Khusanov’s situation is particularly interesting given the public backing he has received from City over the past two months. The 22-year-old signed a new five-year contract in July, keeping him at the Etihad until 2031, after establishing himself during his first full season in England.

Khusanov played 16 of City’s final 19 Premier League matches last season and featured prominently as they won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. He said when signing his new deal that his next challenge was to impress Enzo Maresca and earn a regular place in the team.

Hugo Viana was equally positive about the defender earlier this month. “We’ve been really happy with him,” City’s director of football said. “He’s still developing, still has to learn and we feel sure he can be one of the best centre backs in the world.”

That makes Chelsea’s reported interest notable, although the story remains at an early stage. Khusanov is contracted until 2031 and there has been no reported approach from Stamford Bridge.

For now, four Premier League clubs are said to be monitoring his situation. Whether City would entertain any proposal in January is another matter.
