Michael Carrick admits Man City have advantage before Manchester derby

Michael Carrick has admitted Manchester United’s preparations for Sunday’s derby against Man City are “not ideal”, with City enjoying two additional days of recovery.

Enzo Maresca’s side returned from Portugal following Tuesday night’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Porto and can now turn their full attention towards Old Trafford.

United have rather less breathing space. They host Azerbaijani champions Sabah in the Champions League on Thursday night before facing City on Sunday afternoon.

Carrick responds to Man City advantage

Carrick was asked about City having two extra days to prepare for the derby.

“I’m not concerned,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it’s ideal in some ways, but it’s not something that we’ve given too much thought about.

“We’re not in control of that. We’ve got to deal with the cards that we’re dealt, and that’s what it is, so we’ll make the most of it.”

United’s workload is certainly different from last season, when they played just 40 matches in all competitions. If they reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, they could now play every midweek until January.

City have no such concern this week.

Maresca and his players have four clear days between Porto and Sunday’s 4.30pm kick-off at Old Trafford, which is confirmed by City’s official fixture information.

It is a small advantage, perhaps, but one that Carrick has noted. Unless, of course, this is a prime example of getting your excuses in first.
