Maresca completes City captaincy group with Guéhi and Donnarumma

Man City captains

City manager Enzo Maresca has completed his leadership group for the new season, naming Marc Guéhi and Gianluigi Donnarumma alongside Rúben Dias and Erling Haaland as the club’s four captains.

Maresca confirmed the decision ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game against Coventry City.

And it completes a process he deliberately left open earlier in the summer.

Guéhi and Donnarumma complete the four

Maresca named Dias and Haaland as his first two captains before the season began but said he would wait until the transfer window had closed before selecting the other two.

He later spoke publicly about wanting City to add more leadership following the departures of several experienced players.

The answer is Guéhi and Donnarumma.

Dias has captained City in their opening two Premier League victories over Bournemouth and Crystal Palace and was always an obvious candidate for a senior role.

Guéhi’s inclusion makes sense too. The England defender captained Crystal Palace before moving to the Etihad and arrived with leadership experience already behind him.

Donnarumma provides another experienced voice. The Italy international has captained his country and has been operating at the highest level since his teenage years.

Maresca wanted to wait until his squad was complete before finalising his captains.

With the transfer window closed, the four-man group is now settled: Dias, Haaland, Guéhi and Donnarumma.
