Man City verdict delay branded ‘embarrassment’ as new season begins

Football finance expert Stefan Borson has criticised the continuing wait for a verdict in City’s long-running Premier League case, describing the situation as an “embarrassment”.

Another Premier League season is beginning with City still waiting to discover the outcome, more than three-and-a-half years after the club were initially charged in February 2023.

The case was heard by an independent commission over 12 weeks between September and December 2024, but no verdict has been published.

City have consistently denied wrongdoing.

Speaking to talkSPORT, former City financial adviser Borson questioned how the process had been allowed to drag on for so long, with the 2026/27 campaign now getting under way without a resolution.

His criticism follows comments from Premier League chief executive Richard Masters earlier this week.

Masters acknowledges frustration over Man City wait

Masters admitted the process had taken “longer than expected”, but said he could offer no indication of when a decision would be announced.

He also stressed that the commission must be given the necessary time and space to complete its work.

That leaves City in much the same position as they have been for months.

The hearing finished in December 2024 and the wait for an outcome has now stretched to around 20 months.

Borson has previously questioned the length of that delay, but his latest description of the situation as an “embarrassment” represents particularly strong criticism as another Premier League season begins.

For City, there is still no publicly known timetable for when the commission’s findings will finally be delivered.
