Man City News & Talking Points: Rodri exit nears as Maresca debate begins

City’s changing of the guard gathered pace on Tuesday as Rodri completed his Barcelona medical, while the debate over Enzo Maresca’s start continued following Sunday’s Community Shield defeat by Arsenal.

There was also a significant transfer development involving Pedro Neto, an emotional glimpse behind the scenes of Kevin De Bruyne’s departure and a fresh update on City’s early-season injury picture.

Here are the main City stories from Tuesday, August 18.

Rodri completes Barcelona medical

The biggest development concerns Rodri, whose seven-year stay at Manchester City is now close to its conclusion.

The Spain international has completed his medical in Barcelona after City agreed a deal worth €76.5million (£66m) including add-ons.

It brings one of the summer’s longest-running transfer stories close to an end and leaves City facing the considerable task of replacing a midfielder who has been central to their success.

Rodri joined from Atletico Madrid in 2019 and went on to win 13 major trophies with City, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

His departure also underlines just how extensive the rebuild has become following Pep Guardiola’s exit.

Simon Jordan questions Maresca – after one game

Sunday’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat by Arsenal was hardly the start Maresca wanted.

For talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan, it was enough to raise questions about City’s new manager.

“I’m not sure how good a manager he is,” Jordan said, adding that City “didn’t look like a football team”.

There were clearly problems at Wembley, but judging Maresca after one competitive fixture would be premature. Seven of City’s starters had been involved at the World Cup and several had only recently returned to training.

Replacing Guardiola was always going to involve a period of adjustment. Losing Rodri at the same time hardly makes the job easier.

If City start slowly, history says don’t panic

There is also some useful historical context for anyone concerned by City’s Community Shield performance.

Guardiola himself had difficult starts at the Etihad.

City were ninth as late as matchday 13 during the 2020/21 campaign before embarking on a 13-match winning run and eventually claiming the Premier League title by 12 points.

A year later they lost the Community Shield to Leicester and their opening league game at Tottenham. They still finished as champions.

None of that guarantees Maresca will follow the same path, of course.

It does show why August is a particularly poor time to make sweeping judgements about a team undergoing substantial change.

Chelsea put £100m price on Pedro Neto

City’s transfer options were also back in focus on Tuesday.

Chelsea have reportedly placed a £100million valuation on Pedro Neto amid interest from City and Saudi Arabia.

Neto has been discussed as a possible option should Savinho leave before the transfer deadline, although Chelsea’s asking price would make any deal particularly expensive.

The situation has developed quickly. Al-Hilal have been pursuing the Portugal international, while City have been assessing possible wide players as they consider how the final weeks of their own window could unfold.

At £100m, however, there would be an obvious decision to make over whether Neto represents sufficient value.

Documentary captures De Bruyne’s difficult City goodbye

Away from the current transfer window, Tuesday also brought a reminder of one of the biggest departures of the Guardiola era.

A new documentary has shown Kevin De Bruyne in tears after learning City would not offer him another contract.

“It’s really hard,” De Bruyne says in A Beautiful Obsession, the new four-part series covering Guardiola’s final two seasons at the Etihad.

The Belgian spoke about the effect the decision had on his family, while Guardiola admitted that allowing one of City’s greatest players to leave was painful for him too.

De Bruyne departed after more than 400 appearances and 16 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

City’s injury list begins to clear

There was better news on the fitness front.

Jack Grealish has returned to competitive action after his foot problem, while City’s post-World Cup contingent are now back and available to Maresca.

Savinho remains under assessment after illness kept him out against Arsenal, while Omar Marmoush is on fitness watch after taking a heavy challenge in the Community Shield.

There has been no confirmation that Marmoush suffered an injury.

Rodri has now been removed from the active injury list as his move to Barcelona nears completion.

A new era is becoming very real

For all the understandable attention on one heavy Community Shield defeat, Tuesday’s news provided a much bigger reminder of the scale of change at City.

Guardiola has gone. De Bruyne has gone. Rodri is about to follow him.

Maresca has inherited an enormously talented squad, but it is no longer the side that dominated English football under his predecessor.

City’s response will not be judged at Wembley in August.

The first meaningful test starts against Bournemouth on Sunday.
