Doku extension points to Maresca building around his young core

Doku extension points to Maresca building around his young core

City are set to tie Jeremy Doku down to a new long-term contract, with sources telling BBC Sport the winger will extend his stay at the Etihad until 2031, and an official announcement is expected in the coming days.

A young core taking shape

Doku joined City from Rennes for £55.4m in 2023 and has become an increasingly important part of the attack since, making 48 appearances last season as City won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

He’d be the fourth player to commit to a new deal this summer, following extensions already agreed by Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov — all players in their early-to-mid twenties, and all now tied down before Enzo Maresca’s first full season in charge.

That pattern looks less like coincidence than a deliberate approach from the new manager. Maresca inherits a City side that finished as league runners-up last season, and rather than a wholesale rebuild, the early business of this summer has centred on retaining the players he’s identified as central to what comes next, while adding to the group with signings like Elliot Anderson.

Building blocks before the season starts

Locking down Jeremy Doku fits that plan. His pace and ability to beat players offer a different kind of attacking threat to City’s more possession-based patterns under Guardiola, and giving Maresca certainty over that option heading into pre-season — rather than an unresolved contract situation running into the campaign — is exactly the kind of foundation-laying new managers like to prioritise.

No club statement has been issued yet, and the financial terms of the new deal haven’t been officially confirmed, though earlier reporting this summer suggested a six-year deal with a significantly improved salary was under discussion.
