City confirm Rodri has undergone back surgery

City have confirmed that Rodri has undergone what the club describe as successful minor back surgery, with the midfielder now beginning a period of rehabilitation.

The Spain international had been carrying a lumbar issue for some time, reportedly considering the operation before this summer’s World Cup but opting to delay it in order to be available for the tournament. Rodri went on to win the trophy with Spain and was named the competition’s outstanding player.

Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed the surgery took place this week, telling reporters: “He needs a vacation and a few days of rest. He has to recover and then he’ll come back here with us.”

Reports on the expected recovery time vary. One Spanish outlet suggested Rodri could resume training within three weeks, but other reports have described this type of back surgery as carrying a longer recovery period of several months.

Under the more cautious estimate, Rodri would miss City’s Community Shield meeting with Arsenal on 16 August and the Premier League opener against Bournemouth a week later, with City not due to provide a firmer timeline until his rehabilitation is under way.

The timing adds a fresh layer to speculation over Rodri’s long-term future, with Real Madrid reportedly maintaining an interest in the 30-year-old, though City’s focus for now is on his recovery.
