City want to sign Geronimo Rulli as a new back-up goalkeeper, according to Fabrizio Romano, with James Trafford’s departure to Leeds United leaving a vacancy behind Gianluigi Donnarumma.
City are said to see the 34-year-old Argentine as their preferred option, with Marseille aware of the interest. Rulli is understood to be keen on the move.
Trafford is closing in on a switch to Leeds in a deal worth around £40m, ending a short second spell at the Etihad. He returned from Burnley last year on the understanding he would eventually succeed Ederson as first choice, but City’s move for Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain restricted him to cup football.
City have already signed one goalkeeper this summer in Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, though the 20-year-old was quickly loaned out to Queens Park Rangers, leaving a gap for a more experienced deputy to Donnarumma.
Rulli won the World Cup with Argentina in 2022 and has been first choice at Marseille for the past two seasons. A move to City would represent a reduced role in terms of regular football, with involvement likely limited to domestic cup competitions and cover for Donnarumma.
