City’s move for PSG defender Hermann Malonga has fallen through, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the agreement collapsing weeks after it was reported to have been struck in principle.
It’s a notable reversal. Back in June, reporting — including on this site — described the transfer as complete, with the 18-year-old centre-back set to sign a five-year deal after PSG failed to tie him down to a first professional contract.
That now appears to have been premature. Romano’s update makes clear the deal never got over the line, and the move is off.
No reason for the collapse has been given yet, though these situations with academy graduates on expiring contracts can unravel over relatively small details — image rights, loan-pathway guarantees, or a rival club matching terms at the last moment.
Malonga’s situation at PSG remains unresolved as a result; he was tracked closely by City’s scouting setup through the UEFA Youth League, and interest from elsewhere in Europe is likely to resurface now that the move has broken down.
For City, it’s a minor but not insignificant setback. Malonga was seen as low-cost, long-term defensive depth rather than an immediate first-team option, so the impact on Enzo Maresca’s squad planning is limited.
