Erling Haaland’s first World Cup finished on Saturday, as Norway lost 2-1 after extra time to England in the quarter-final in Miami.
It was Norway’s first appearance at the tournament since 1998, and the last eight matches their best finish since then.
Haaland arrived at the match on the back of a run of 14 consecutive competitive appearances with a goal for Norway, worth 27 goals in total.
He had scored seven goals in four matches at this World Cup, four of them match-winners — a tally matched only by Grzegorz Lato of Poland in 1974 and Salvatore Schillaci of Italy in 1990.
Norway led through Andreas Schjelderup’s finish in the 35th minute. Haaland’s best chance of the night came shortly after the hour, a header from inside the box saved by Jordan Pickford, who got a hand to the ball and turned it around the post.
Norway had a goal ruled out midway through the second half, Torbjorn Heggem converting a rebound at a corner, but VAR disallowed it after finding that Haaland had fouled new City teammate Elliot Anderson in the build-up.
Jude Bellingham equalised for England in first-half stoppage time and scored the winning goal three minutes into extra time, after Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland failed to hold a shot from Morgan Rogers. Haaland was substituted midway through extra time, replaced by Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Three of Haaland’s City teammates were on the pitch for England: Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Elliot Anderson, who progress to Wednesday’s semi-final against Argentina.
