City have confirmed Sverre Nypan will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Belgian side Lommel SK, a surprise switch for the Norwegian midfielder.
The move was announced by Fabrizio Romano before being confirmed on City’s own social channels, with the loan subject to international clearance. City wished the 19-year-old good luck as he heads out for what will be his second loan spell in as many years.
From Boro to Belgium
Nypan joined City from Rosenborg last July on a five-year deal, arriving with a reputation as one of the most promising teenage talents in European football after becoming Rosenborg’s youngest-ever player at 15.
His first loan, at Middlesbrough, didn’t go entirely to plan. He made 22 appearances across all competitions before the move was mutually terminated in February, bringing him back to the Etihad rather than seeing out the season in the Championship.
A different kind of test
Lommel is an unconventional next step. The Belgian second-tier club is owned by City Football Group, part of the same multi-club network as City themselves, making this less a conventional loan and more a continuation of his development within the family.
It gives Nypan regular first-team football away from the immediate spotlight of the Championship, with City clearly still convinced of his long-term potential having handed him his first senior Norway call-up back in October.
Whether a season in Belgium proves more productive than his spell at Middlesbrough remains to be seen, but it’s another step in City’s long-term project with one of their most highly-rated academy arrivals.
