Man City star handed a stay of execution as Real Madrid’s interest goes cold

Rodri isn’t going anywhere this summer. Probably. Maybe.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has decided against a move for the Man City midfielder, with the relationship between the two parties currently “completely cold.” It’s about as direct a shutdown as transfer talk gets — even if it isn’t the end of the story.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, was clear that Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the Bernabeu hasn’t changed Perez’s thinking. Real Madrid have already ruled out a move for Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez this summer, and Rodri now appears to be filed alongside him.

That doesn’t mean City’s position is entirely comfortable. Romano also revealed that a new contract offer has sat on the table since April without Rodri accepting it, and no financial agreement has been reached between the two sides. The suggestion is that Rodri could yet see out one more season under Enzo Maresca before leaving on a free transfer in 2027, once his current deal has run down.

For now, though, City fans can file this under good news. Rodri missed a significant chunk of last season through injury and remains central to whatever Maresca is building at the Etihad. Losing him to Real Madrid mid-rebuild would have been a considerably bigger story than losing him for nothing in twelve months’ time.

Erling Haaland’s name came up in the same conversation. Romano was equally direct there too — no move to Madrid this summer, though he stopped short of ruling it out for the future, noting Haaland himself hasn’t dismissed the idea “one day.”

Two City stars, two names Real Madrid keep coming back to, and for now, two doors that stay shut. Whether that holds until 2027 is another matter entirely.
