- Doku could be rewarded after growing in importance at City
- The Belgian has become a key wide option at the Etihad
- Man City appear keen to protect another long-term asset
Jeremy Doku could be set for another major step in his Man City career as the club move to secure one of their most dangerous attackers.
The Belgian winger has had to fight for his place at Man City since arriving from Rennes. Doku joined the Sky Blues in 2023, arriving as an exciting wide player with pace, directness and elite one-on-one ability.
However, becoming a regular at the Etihad was never meant to be straightforward. With intense competition in the final third, the 24-year-old has had to adapt his game to become more decisive.
Regardless, his five goals and five assists in 19 Premier League starts last season only underscore his contributions.
Jeremy Doku close to new Man City contract
According to journalist Nicolo Schira, Doku is ‘one step away’ from extending his contract with the FA Cup winners.
The journalist claims the new deal would run until 2031, with the winger also set to receive a salary increase.
The Belgian’s current contract runs until 2028, meaning City are not under immediate pressure to secure his future.
However, rather than waiting for the situation to become more urgent, the Citizens prefer moving early to reward a player they believe can remain important for years to come.
Doku extension would reward clear progress
While his goal involvement was not high, Doku created 0.66 big chances per 90 in the Premier League last season.
Despite limited starts, he sits in the top 3.8 per cent of left wingers in the Premier League for big chances created per 90.
Likewise, even with low goal involvement, his goals arrived during important spells of the season. Doku scored two goals against Everton in a 3-3 draw.
City did lose the Premier League title to Arsenal, but without the Belgian’s goals against the Toffees, the race would have ended much earlier.
The winger also went on to open the scoring against Brentford as City won 3-0 that day, keeping their title hopes alive.
New deal would protect City from future pressure
A long-term extension would also strengthen City’s position in the transfer market. If the Carabao Cup winners wait another year, rival clubs could easily start making their moves for the player.
Doku remains a valuable asset for the Manchester-based outfit. At 24, he would not be short of interest if his contract entered its final two years.
The extension also reassures the winger of his place at the Etihad. While his use remains to be seen under Enzo Maresca, the club’s hierarchy believes that Doku will prove useful in the coming years.
