Bernardo Silva backed for FC Barcelona move after Man City exit
  • Silva is yet to make a final decision on his future
  • Barcelona have been repeatedly linked with the midfielder
  • The Portugal boss has now offered his verdict on a possible move

Bernardo Silva’s future has taken another turn after Portugal boss Roberto Martinez backed the former Man City midfielder for a move to Barcelona.

The Portuguese midfielder has left the Etihad after a hugely successful spell under Pep Guardiola. He became one of the most important players of City’s modern era under the Catalan gaffer.

Silva’s ability to play in midfield, from wide areas and between the lines made him one of Guardiola’s most trusted players.

The 31-year-old is now facing constant links with FC Barcelona. Likewise, Roberto Martinez has backed the midfielder for the role in the Catalan capital.

Speaking after Portugal’s 2-1 win over Chile, Martinez was asked what Silva could offer to Barcelona. The manager praised the 31-year-old’s adaptability.

Martinez claims that Silva could adjust to any dressing room in world football. He further went on to say that the system or players won’t affect the midfielder’s adaptability.

“It seems to me that Bernardo Silva is such a spectacular player that he enters all the dressing rooms of world football,” Martinez told the press.

He added, “Such a player does not appear free, but he is a player who can adjust to any system and any style. You can improve what you have around you.”

Former Man City midfielder remains open despite Barcelona links

FC Barcelona are not the only club watching Bernardo’s situation. Juventus and Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing the Portuguese international.

Real Madrid could also become one to watch if Jose Mourinho’s influence grows, as the new gaffer has included Bernardo on his list of targets.

Benfica, Saudi Arabian clubs and MLS outfits have also been linked with the 31-year-old. However, the midfielder is keen on staying in Europe and hasn’t made a final decision yet.

Barcelona view Bernardo as a conditional opportunity

Reports in Spain have suggested Hansi Flick views the midfielder positively. However, FC Barcelona need to create space before making a serious push.

Bernardo fits the profile of a player that Barcelona admire. The Catalan giants tried to sign him across several transfer windows, and now they have the opportunity to do so for free.

Nevertheless, the situation remains complicated as fitting the profile does not directly lead to a commitment from the club.
