The club that dominated England now faces life without Pep Guardiola

  • Enzo Maresca tasked with replacing him

Pep Guardiola’s decision to leave Manchester City closes the most successful chapter in the club’s history.

After nearly a decade of dominance in England and Europe, the manager who transformed City into football’s modern powerhouse will step away at the end of the 2025/26 season. His departure now leaves Manchester City facing its biggest rebuild since the Abu Dhabi takeover in 2008.

Guardiola built Manchester City into football’s model club

When Guardiola arrived in 2016, Manchester City already had elite players and financial power. Manchester City’s transformation under Guardiola went far beyond silverware. Before his arrival, the club often approached European campaigns carrying the reputation of underachievers, regularly falling short in decisive knockout matches despite enormous investment and elite talent. The pressure around City in Europe grew every season, yet genuine belief across the continent remained limited.

Guardiola completely reversed that narrative. Manchester City stopped being viewed as a wealthy club chasing validation and became the team others feared drawing in the knockout stages. The shift became obvious through the Champions League odds, where City repeatedly entered seasons as favourites ahead of traditional European giants. That change reflected more than squad quality. It showed how Guardiola rebuilt the club’s mentality, tactical identity, and consistency on the biggest stage in football.

During his time at the club, City won:

  • Six Premier League titles
  • One UEFA Champions League
  • Multiple domestic cups
  • FIFA Club World Cup
  • UEFA Super Cup

More importantly, Guardiola turned Manchester City into the modern blueprint for elite football clubs across Europe.

Why Guardiola Decided To Leave

Guardiola described the decision as natural rather than dramatic. He stated that nothing is eternal and suggested the timing simply felt correct after ten years at the club.

Still, several factors likely contributed to the decision.

Mental fatigue appears significant. Managing at the highest level for a decade requires constant pressure, tactical evolution, and emotional intensity. Guardiola repeatedly spoke in recent years about exhaustion linked to elite football management.

Another factor is the end of a competitive cycle. Many of City’s core players are aging, including Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. Rebuilding another title-winning generation would require major structural changes.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Premier League’s 115 financial charges against Manchester City also adds pressure around the club. Guardiola publicly defended the organization during the investigation period, but the unresolved situation continues to create instability.

Manchester City Now Enters Its Most Uncertain Era

City remain one of the richest and best-run clubs in football, but Guardiola’s departure removes the central figure holding the entire structure together.

This is where the real test begins.

History shows how difficult life becomes after legendary managers leave:

  • Manchester United declined after Sir Alex Ferguson
  • Arsenal struggled for years after Arsène Wenger
  • Barcelona never fully recreated the Guardiola era
  • Liverpool faces a major transition after Klopp

Manchester City could experience a similar adjustment period.

The tactical certainty Guardiola provided disappears immediately. His ability to control matches, improve players, and maintain winning standards became part of the club’s identity. Replacing those qualities is almost impossible.

Enzo Maresca appears to be the leading replacement

Current reports strongly link Enzo Maresca with the job. The Italian previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant before managing independently.

The logic behind the choice is obvious.

Maresca:

  • Understands Guardiola’s system
  • Knows the club internally
  • Prefers possession football
  • Fits City’s long-term philosophy

However, replacing Guardiola is different from learning under him.

Every result will face comparison to the most successful era in club history. Guardiola normalized 90-point seasons, deep Champions League runs, and tactical perfection. Any decline could quickly increase pressure on the next manager.

Even talented coaches often struggle after inheriting dominant teams built around legendary figures.

Guardiola’s exit could affect Manchester City’s squad

Guardiola played a major role in attracting elite players to Manchester City. Many stars specifically wanted to work under him.

That influence now disappears.

Players like Erling Haaland, Rodri, Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva joined or developed inside Guardiola’s system. Some may eventually reconsider their long-term futures without the manager who shaped the project, and Silva has already decided to follow him out of the door.

The transfer market could also change. Guardiola’s presence gave City a unique advantage when competing for world-class talent. Players often accepted Guardiola’s demanding style because of his reputation and tactical brilliance. Without him, Manchester City becomes a different proposition.

Manchester City’s identity will now be questioned

The biggest challenge is not replacing trophies. It is replacing identity. For almost a decade, Manchester City football meant Guardiola football. The club’s style, structure, and reputation were built around one manager’s ideas.

Now City must decide:

  • continue Guardiola’s philosophy
  • gradually evolve tactically
  • or begin an entirely new era

That decision shapes the club’s next decade.

Manchester City still possesses elite infrastructure, enormous financial power, and world-class players. Those advantages ensure the club remains competitive.

However, Guardiola’s departure closes the most successful chapter in City’s history. Whether the club continues dominating English football or enters a period of instability depends entirely on what happens next.
