- Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr has been linked to City
- The Brazilian has played 372 times for Los Blancos
- He has history with City fans
With Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr linked to Manchester City, we’re taking a closer look at how well he might fit into Guardiola’s side and whether City fans would accept him after recent controversies.
Brazilian international Vinicius has established himself as one of the top wingers in the world for a number of seasons.
The 25-year-old has played close to 400 games for Real Madrid, and already has 47 senior appearances for his country.
However, he is yet to agree a new contract with the Spanish giants, sparking exit rumours. With City among those linked, we’re taking a look at how he might fit into the Sky Blues’ side.
Manchester City linked with Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr
According to recent reports, City are interested in signing Vinicius Jr. The winger has been locked in contract talks with Madrid, but is yet to sign a new deal.
With just 12 months left on his current contract, an exit has not been ruled out. TEAMtalk have reported that Madrid are open to selling the Brazilian if talks break down this summer.
City are among the clubs monitoring the situation, and have emerged as ‘serious contenders’ to sign Vinicius Jr if he leaves Real.
Other interested parties include Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and a several other top European sides such as PSG and Bayern Munich.
How would Vinicius Jr fit in at Manchester City?
Primarily a left winger, Vinicius has played across the forward line during his career. Although usually on the left, he is right-footed and frequently cuts inside to create shooting opportunities.
With 127 goals and 100 assists in 372 games for Madrid, the Brazilian’s goal contributions are among the highest of any winger in Europe’s top five leagues.
Were he to join City, he would likely be competing with Jeremy Doku for the left wing spot, though Vinicius’ flexibility means he could also slot in on the right or through the middle.
Past controversies could harm City fan reception
However, while his talent is unquestionable, there is some past animosity between Vinicius and Man City fans that could cause friction.
In 2024, City star Rodri won the Ballon d’Or ahead of Vinicius, with the Madrid man controversially speaking out after being overlooked.
Vinicius said: “I know many people never wanted me to win the Ballon d’Or. Well, I didn’t win it, hopefully they’re happy now. Despite my stats, trophies, and personal accolades, they still gave the award to someone else.
Those comments will not have endeared him to City fans, nor will his ‘crying’ celebration at the Etihad earlier this season after scoring in the Champions League.
However, such things are usually forgotten quickly if a signing arrives in good form and starts scoring and assisting for their new club.
