- Bunny Shaw set to leave Man City Women
- Intentions become known after WSL triumph
- Club unable to get new deal completed
Manchester City’s all-time top scorer is set to leave the club this summer due to a breakdown in talks over a new contract.
Khadija Shaw is having quite the season for Manchester City, bagging 19 goals and four assists in 21 appearances.
The striker scored her team’s only goal against Birmingham in the FA Women’s Cup quarter-final last month.
More recently, she landed on the scoresheet during a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.
In spite of this loss, Shaw will end the campaign as a champion, with Man City winning the WSL on Wednesday night after Arsenal’s draw with the Seagulls.
Khadija Shaw set to leave Man City
Every good story comes to an end and after the highs of last night, The Guardian have reported that Shaw is set to exit Man City this summer.
The 29-year-old has been involved in ‘extensive talks’ over a new deal, but in the end she has opted to pursue a new challenge.
Shaw had informed the club of his desire to stay, but there were matters which could not be agreed on, including the length of a new contract.
Additionally, the Citizens have not matched the financial offers of rival clubs, with Chelsea ready to pay the centre forward £1m per year.
Shaw has been a goal machine for Man City
This season is just one of many where Shaw has stepped up and proved herself to be Man City’s standout attacker.
In total, she has scored 110 goals in 133 appearances since making the move from Bordeaux five years ago.
During this timespan, Shaw has been named as the PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year and won the WSL player of the year award.
On top of this, she is on course to win the golden boot in the league for a third successive season.
Shaw will be missed by Man City
Without Shaw’s contributions, this season’s WSL triumph would simply not have been a possibility.
The Jamaican international has been so clinical in a Man City shirt, and it is quite surprising that her demands have not been met.
City ought to have pulled out all the stops to keep Shaw at the club, as replacing a player so prolific will be far from easy.
However, this is a task which must be undertaken in the summer to ensure Man City continue to dominate the domestic women’s game for the foreseeable future.
