- Antoine Semenyo becomes victim of racism yet again
- Marc Guahi targeted on social media
- Man City respond with club statement
Manchester City have released a statement after Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi were hit with vile racial abuse.
The focus surrounding Monday night’s match should have been on the game itself, with Everton and Manchester City scoring six goals between them.
It was a thoroughly entertaining night of football, topped off by a last-minute equaliser scored by Jeremy Doku.
However, the occasion has been spoilt by online trolls and a supporter inside the stadium, who have racially abused two members of Man City’s squad.
Man City condemn racial abuse
According to Man City’s official website, Antoine Semenyo was the victim of a racially aggravated incident inside the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
After the game, Marc Guehi received floods of abuse on social media, prompting a response from the club.
Man City’s statement read: “Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo at yesterday’s match.
“We welcome the swift action taken by Everton and the police to identify the individual responsible.
“We are also incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guéhi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night.
“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game.”
An all too familiar story for Semenyo
Only last month, Semenyo shared a racist comment he received on Instagram alongside the caption ‘it’s started again’.
This came after an incident at the start of the season, when Semenyo was racially abused by a Liverpool fan at Anfield while playing for Bournemouth.
The Ghanaian international keeps on being targeted, and yet all he is doing is turning up to play football.
Racism has no place in society
We often hear terms like football against racism, and it desperately needs eradicating from the sport we all love and adore. Nevertheless, this discriminatory behaviour is a wider issue which has been plaguing the world for years.
Whether in football or daily life, anyone guilty of racist behaviour should be called out and forced to suffer the consequences of their actions.
No matter what happens, Semenyo, Guehi and any other player should never face any derogatory comments on the basis of their skin colour or ethnicity.
