Analysing Man City’s last five games vs Everton ahead of Premier League title-defining clash

Share
  • Manchester City’s last five results against Everton
  • City have won four and drawn one game.
  • Erling Haaland has played a key role.

Ahead of Monday’s contest between Everton and Manchester City, takeaways could emerge from reviewing the last five games between the two sides.

Manchester City are in fine touch, winning their last three Premier League games against Chelsea, Arsenal and Burnley. However, if City drop points at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, their pursuit to become the champions of England could be dented significantly.

Despite Manchester City’s grueling fixture schedule, the Sky Blues have no choice but to show they have the makings of champions against Everton.

Winning four out of their last five games against the Toffees, history suggests City will get over the line once again.

Manchester City 2-0 Everton

The last time Manchester City and Everton went toe-to-toe with each other in October, the hosts won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. The scoreline does not do justice to the visitors’ spirited display, inspired by the mercurial Iliman Ndiaye.

Ndiaye ran rings around Manchester City but at the end of the day, cream rises to the top, typified by Erling Haaland bagging a brilliant brace to settle the contest.

Haaland’s opening goal was assisted by the in-form Nico O’Reilly, who put in an inch-perfect cross to set up the star striker.

The Norwegian’s second was a well-taken finish from inside the box, although Jordan Pickford let the ball pass him by far too easily.

Everton 0-2 Manchester City

In April last year, Manchester City’s trip to Goodison Park was one viewed as a contest that was key for Pep Guardiola’s men to secure Champions League football.

Everton pushed City to the brink, with the likes of James Tarkoswki hitting the post and Jarrad Branthwaite coming close to scoring the opener if not for a brilliantly instinctive save from Stefan Ortega.

However, in the 84th minute, O’Reilly came to the rescue for his boyhood club by getting on the end of a pinpoint cutback from Matheus Nunes.

Mateo Kovacic wrote his name into the scoresheet with a brilliant finish from outside the box as he was falling to seal a crucial 2-0 win for City.

Manchester City 1-1 Everton

In December 2024, Manchester City were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw against Everton. Bernardo Silva’s 14th-minute strike was an early sign that City meant business as they were dominating proceedings.

However, later in the first half, Ndiaye equalised by scoring a terrific volley; with the now-exit-linked Rico Lewis culpable at the back for failing to track the Senegalese winger.

Haaland had the chance to seal Manchester City’s win when Savinho won a penalty inside the box after dancing past Vitaliy Mykolenko.

However, the star striker’s spot-kick was saved by Pickford.

The rebound was headed by Josko Gvardiol in Haaland’s direction, who found the back of the net but was deemed offside; summing up a rough day at the office for the Sky Blues.

Manchester City 2-0 Everton

Haaland seems to grab the headlines against Everton and in February 2024, he did so for the right reasons by scoring a brace.

The Leeds-born goalscorer’s first goal came in the 71st minute, as his predatory instincts stood out in particular.

The 25-year-old was perfectly positioned at the back post and once the ball landed in his path from a corner, the two-time Premier League winner scored a thunderous half-volley to open City’s account.

Haaland often doesn’t get much room but as Manchester City went on the counter late into the game, he was found in acres of space by Kevin De Bruyne; with the former being isolated with Branthwaite.

The City number nine outmuscled the Englishman, leaving the defender on the floor before bursting past him to score his second of the day. Manchester City’s persistence was ultimately rewarded with three points.

Everton 1-3 Manchester City

Manchester City’s 3-1 triumph against Everton in December 2023 was one that must be remembered for Phil Foden’s heroics.

When Jack Harrison scored the opener, City fans worldwide would have been worried but the Stockport-born midfielder brought them back into the contest with a rasping strike from outside the box.

Foden ran the show, beating players, testing Pickford and wreaking havoc across the pitch.

However, it was Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva whose goals meant City came out on top. Alvarez’s penalty struck Pickford’s leg but still bypassed the Everton number one.

As for Bernardo’s strike, a brilliant piece of pressing from Alvarez meant he blocked Pickford’s goal kick and the Portuguese international dinked the ball into an empty net from range.

Man City need another victory

City will be looking to continue their positive record against the Toffees with a victory on Monday night. Kick off is at 8pm BST.
