Sheffield United keen to re-sign Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips on loan for next season
  • Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been on loan at Sheffield United
  • The Blades want to re-sign him for next season
  • Phillips has been out with a knee injury and underwent surgery

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips could be heading back to Sheffield United next season, with the Yorkshire club keen to extend his loan for another year.

Former England international Phillips, 30, moved to Bramall Lane on deadline day in January in search of more game time after struggling for minutes once again at City.

Unfortunately, the midfielder suffered a serious knee injury in February’s Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday, meaning he has been sidelined for the past two months.

However, The Star have reported that United are keen to bring the midfielder back to the club next season, despite his lack of appearances.

This is because the Blades’ management are said to be particularly impressed with Phillips’ attitude since arriving at the club after a frustrating period in his career.

Kalvin Phillips looking to reignite career with Sheffield United

Ex-England international Phillips joined Man City in 2022 with high hopes. However, having failed to secure a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s side, he has spent recent seasons on loan with Ipswich Town, West Ham and now Sheffield United.

His knee injury will only have added to the frustration he will undoubtedly have felt given how his career has unfolded since joining City.

Still, having been handed a lifeline by the Blades, a return to the club next season could suit everyone involved.

Nevertheless, any deal would require City to cooperate financially, with the Premier League side believed to be covering the vast majority of Phillips’ wages.

Phillips’ Man City career has been blighted by injuries

While it hasn’t worked out for Phillips at City, it’s not through lack of trying. The ex-England man has been plagued by injuries since leaving Elland Road for the Etihad Stadium.

He failed to gain a permanent move over the summer due to undergoing Achilles tendon surgery, then spent the first half of the season minimally involved for the Citizens.

It’s a shame to see a player like Phillips struggle as he has done recently. However, if he can find his fitness, Sheffield United may be the perfect place for him to reset his career.
