  • Rodri’s contract expires next summer
  • He has been linked with Real Madrid
  • Man City would prefer not to sell the midfielder

Rodri has been linked with Real Madrid, but Manchester City are taking action to prevent him from leaving.

Manchester City have had to deal with a lot of negative press in recent weeks, from discussions of a 60-point deduction, to Rodri hinting at an exit.

Of course, the Spaniard has since attempted to clarify his recent comments, suggesting his now infamous interview was heavily edited.

Despite this, Rodri is yet to sign a new deal at Man City, causing rumours over his future to continue lingering.

Man City offer Rodri a new contract

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are looking to shut down talks of a Rodri exit by offering him a new contract.

Ultimately, the 29-year-old will make a decision on whether to renew, with Real Madrid still interested in his signature.

Should Rodri choose not to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, City will attempt to secure a big transfer fee this summer.

Failure to do this would see the 2024 Balloon d’Or winner leave the club as a free agent next summer. However, every effort will be made to prevent this from happening.

Man City have got their timing right with Rodri

It is no surprise Man City have chosen to offer Rodri a new contract now, as opposed to the end of the season.

After all, the Citizens need to plan for the summer, so they need to know if the midfielder plans to stick around in the long-term.

Bernardo Silva is leaving in the summer and if Rodri does not put pen to paper on a new deal, he will be on the move too.

Therefore, City are taking the sensible option of assessing his future, before making decisions on their own transfer targets.

matchday.
