- Phil Foden’s game time has decreased at Man City
- Thomas Tuchel might not take him to the World Cup
- Gabriel Agbonlahor has told the star to leave his boyhood club
Phil Foden is enduring a rough patch at Manchester City and Gabriel Agbonlahor has explained why now is the time for him to move on.
A few months ago, Phil Foden was a nailed-on starter at Manchester City, but these days he is named on the bench more often than not.
Astonishingly, the midfielder has not started Man City’s most recent match in every single competition the club are competing in.
In contrast, Foden was recently handed two starts for England. However, this led to Thomas Tuchel saying the 25-year-old was not guaranteed a World Cup place this summer.
Gabriel Agbonlahor tells Phil Foden to leave Man City
Tuchel’s recent comments have prompted ex-Aston Villa forward Agbonlahor to encourage Foden to leave Man City.
This is because while the Citizens are improving, Foden is receiving fewer minutes on the pitch in a pattern which only looks set to continue.
“Thomas Tuchel will think, ‘this is a top player, I’ve followed him all his career’,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.
“But, he would have learnt a lot from, ‘He trained really well, but couldn’t do it in the games’, and that’s something you never want to be called as a football player, a training ground player.
“I just think Phil Foden proved against Uruguay and Japan that he’s just not the Phil Foden of old,” he continued.
“It happens, maybe he needs a move away from Manchester City, needs to go and play somewhere else. Manchester City are going to keep strengthening, and he’s just not getting the game time.”
Man City are looking to keep Foden
Despite Agbonlahor’s verdict, Man City are not looking to sell Foden. Plus, the fact his contract expires next year means they are exploring a new deal.
This is not exactly surprising, considering Foden is a homegrown and locally trained player at the club. On top of this, the midfielder has made 41 appearances this season.
Ultimately, one rough patch does not mean the star’s City career is dead and buried and he will be aiming to get back to his previous levels.
