- Norway achieved automatic qualification to the World Cup
- Erling Haaland scored more goals than any other player
- His achievement has been recognised with an award
World Cup qualifying is officially over and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has topped the scoring charts.
Ginaluigi Donnarumma’s Italy were knocked out of World Cup qualifying by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The very reason they had to play this match in the first place was because Norway finished six points above them in the group stage.
This Norwegian success was largely thanks to Erling Haaland, who scored more goals than any other player in the qualifying fixtures.
Erling Haaland is the World Cup qualifying top scorer
During the qualifiers, Haaland racked up an impressive 16 goals in eight appearances. Do the maths and that is indeed an average of two goals per game.
The striker’s campaign got off to a steady start, as he slotted in a single goal during each of his opening four matches.
However, Haaland ran riot with five goals against Moldova. After this, he scored a hat-trick at Israel’s expense, before bagging doubles against Estonia and Italy respectively.
Man City need Haaland back at his best
When Haaland is in-form, there is absolutely no stopping him. Currently though, the 25-year-old is going through a fairly quiet patch.
Haaland has not scored in his three most recent Premier League appearances and he blanked in the Carabao Cup final.
If Man City are to make a push for the league title and FA Cup, they could really do with the Norway international upping his game.
