  • Pep Guardiola’s Man City contract expires soon
  • The manager could leave even sooner
  • Vincent Kompany is viewed as his possible successor

Manchester City have identified one of their former players as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola as the club’s manager.

One of the biggest questions looming over Manchester City is about whether Pep Guardiola is going to leave this summer.

The Catalan manager has been in charge of the club for almost a decade, but his contract is due to expire next year.

Should Guardiola decide on an early exit, a replacement will need to be brought in ahead of Man City’s pre-season preparations.

Manchester City could make an approach for Vincent Kompany

According to Sky Sports Germany, Man City are likely to consider Vincent Kompany for their managerial role if Guardiola calls it a day at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich are aware of City’s interest in their former captain, but there is no plan to allow him to depart.

After all, Kompany recently extended his contract, meaning it will not expire for another three years. On top of this, multiple players at the Bundesliga side have extended their own contracts because of the Belgian.

Man City will have to be persuasive to secure Kompany

Clearly, Man City have an advantage with Kompany, due to everything he achieved during his playing career at the Etihad Stadium.

The opportunity to tug at his heartstrings and persuade him by emotional means is something which could be used to get a deal done.

However, Kompany is having another successful domestic season and his team are among the favourites to win the Champions League.

Man City are still somewhat of a project at this stage and Kompany would be having to leave a team who he has already put in the work to establish.
