- Bernardo Silva has reflected on winning his first trophy at Man City
- The Citizens defeated Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final
- This led the team to bigger and better things.
Bernardo Silva has revealed why defeating Arsenal in the 2018 Carabao Cup final was so significant for Manchester City.
Six Premier League titles, one Champions League, two FA Cups. These are just some of the honours Bernardo Silva has collected during his time at Manchester City.
The club captain has won everything there is to win in England, but all this began with a League Cup triumph back in 2018.
Man City defeated Arsenal 3-0 at Wembley Stadium, in what would go on to be the start of something very special.
Bernardo Silva explains why Man City’s Carabao Cup win was so important
Winning a League Cup is all well and good, but for Silva and his teammates, it was a stepping stone to bigger things.
This triumph was so crucial to Man City because it gave them momentum and belief to go on and win more trophies in the future.
“It was very important,” Silva told Man City regarding his first ever Carabao Cup win with the club.
“The first one is always vital emotionally and to try to create that atmosphere and that feeling that winning is important and it needs to be a part of our journey.
“It gave us the confidence to then go after the other ones, including the Premier League that season. The first title is always so important in any player’s career.
“It was a young team. The quality was unbelievable but we also had experienced guys like Vinny [Vincent Kompany], [Sergio] Aguero, David Silva that had won trophies in England before and knew what it took to win titles.”
He added: “With a young team, when you win once it’s always easier to win more and more and more.”
Another Carabao Cup victory could be a new starting point for Man City
Recently, Silva said Man City were undergoing a transition, with new, younger players arriving at the Etihad Stadium for the very first time.
With Man City ending last season without a trophy, a victory on Sunday could spark a similar reaction to the 2018 triumph.
The Citizens will start to believe again that they can win silverware, which will give them a better chance of lifting the FA Cup at the end of the season.
Some of these players, like Silva all those years ago, have never won a competition before and a win over Arsenal could unlock the confidence required to go on and win even more.
