How Pep Guardiola once convinced Kyle Walker not to leave Manchester City for Bayern Munich

Kyle Walker almost departed Manchester City for a move to Germany, but Pep Guardiola did something which changed the right-back’s mind.

It is no secret that Kyle Walker is not the player he used to be and this can be seen by the fact he has announced his retirement from international football.

However, the 35-year-old was a tremendous player in his prime and he played an important role in helping Manchester City win heaps of silverware.

The Burnley star joined City from Tottenham Hotspur in 2017 and during that time he won six Premier League titles, a Champions League and various other trophies.

Kyle Walker almost left Man City for Bayern Munich

According to Walker himself, there was a time when it looked like he could bid Man City farewell in order to join Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich.

However, the defender remained at the club after sharing a meal with Pep Guardiola and he has absolutely no regrets about his final decision.

Walker told The Overlap: “Two years ago [Thomas Tuchel tried to sign me at Bayern Munich]. Pep took me for dinner and I decided to stay at Man City.

“He took me out for dinner in Manchester. We went there and we had a nice meal, and I decided to extend my stay at Man City.

“And I’m so happy I did because we won another league, four-in-a-row, and I was the captain for that. That’s something I can always hold dearly.”

Man City are still looking for a Walker replacement

Eventually the time did come when Walker requested to leave Man City and the fans were not too impressed, considering he still had a few months remaining on his contract.

Following a loan move to AC Milan, Walker joined Burnley on a permanent transfer, but Man City are still yet to sign a proper replacement.

Matheus Nunes has impressed in his new role this season, but he is still a midfielder by trade. Therefore, City will be looking to make this summer the one where they add a new right-back to their ranks who is good enough to start on a regular basis.
