Why Manchester City’s Premier League title race with Arsenal feels familiar

Manchester City are battling Arsenal for the Premier League title and they are hoping to come out on top, as they did three seasons ago.

It has been another competitive season in the Premier League, with drama still to come at both ends of the table.

Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and West Ham are fighting each other for survival, while there is a two-horse race between Arsenal and Manchester City for the top spot.

City currently triail the league leaders by five points, but with a game in hand, the teams are much closer together in reality.

Manchester City have recovered a five point deficit before

Interestingly, Man City have previously come back from a very similar situation to the one they find themselves in now.

The 2022/23 season saw the two teams divided by eight points after Arsenal had played 29 matches, while City had a game in hand. This year, the only difference is that both teams have lower points tallies and it is only a five-point gap which separates the two teams.

Despite the contrast between the sides three campaigns ago, Man City won the Premier League that year by five points, even after losing their final match of the season to Brentford.

Man City must triumph over Arsenal again

If Man City wish to win the Premier League, gathering enough points to catch up with Arsenal is a must, but this will not be easy.

The gap this season is not as extreme, but it could be argued that City had a stronger squad in 2022/23 than the one Pep Guardiola has at his disposal now.

Do they have what it takes to pull off another impressive comeback? Only time will tell, but if Brighton can do the Citizens a favour on Wednesday and defeat Arsenal, that would definitely increase the likelihood of a title triumph.
