Manchester City want to sign a permanent right-back this summer, but the club’s top transfer target could cost more than anyone ever has in his position.
Last month it was reported that Man City were plotting a summer swoop from Tino Livramento, who is currently out with a hamstring injury.
The full-back’s Newcastle contract expires in little more than two years and he is considering his options before making any drastic decisions regarding his future.
It is no surprise City are looking to find a new right-back, considering Matheus Nunes is naturally a midfielder, while Rico Lewis can also play in the middle of the pitch.
Man City will have to pay a premium transfer fee for Tino Livramento
Of course, very few players come cheap in the modern game and this is especially true of English internationals.
According to Team Talk, Newcastle are eager to secure £70m if Livramento decides he wants to leave, meaning the 23-year-old would become the world’s most expensive full-back.
Despite this hefty asking price, Man City see Livramento as the ‘ideal candidate’ and are willing to pay big to secure his signature.
Man City have spent big on defenders in the past
Should City choose to give in to Newcastle’s transfer demands, this would not be the first time the club have broken a transfer record.
No British team have paid more for a full-back than Manchester City, who spent £57m to bring Joao Cancelo from the Etihad Stadium to Juventus.
Also, City paid £77m for Josko Gvardiol, making him the second most expensive defender in the world behind Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.
Therefore, it would not exactly be novel for the Premier League club to once again splash out on a player who will strengthen their back line.
