Pep Guardiola has explained exactly why Antoine Semenyo has made such a great start to life at Manchester City.
Antoine Semenyo was attracting interest from a number of clubs ahead of the mid-season transfer window, but it was Manchester City who managed to win the race for his signature.
The forward has registered five goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions for his new club and he is currently third in the Premier League golden boot race.
Semenyo has been particularly useful as he has played on the left and right wings, slotting in wherever he is needed with Savinho and Jeremy Doku out injured.
Pep Guardiola lauds Antoine Semenyo
Without question, Semenyo has been a terrific signing for City and Guardiola has pointed out that his game is about far more than just scoring goals.
The manager has highlighted how Semenyo is able to play in multiple positions, while looking forward to the 26 year old making his Champions League debut next month.
Guardiola said: “He [Semenyo] scored a lot of goals but it’s not just that – he has a special rhythm and versatility to play in three positions, he came from Bournemouth with incredible rhythm defensively. His impact has been really good.
“We played against Antoine many times. When he became top class or elite, we have to see. He is playing Champions League that he has never played before, the knockout position it’s a good test for him but I’m pretty sure with his mentality he will handle it quite well.
“Normally the guys who come adapt really quick because the guys who have been here for a long time make it no problem.
Semenyo could make the difference for Man City in the Champions League
Manchester City are set to be handed a tough Champions League last 16 draw, with Bodo/Glimt and Real Madrid looking like their most likely opponents.
City did get the better of Madrid in the league phase, but suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Norweigens.
However, Guardiola did not have Semenyo at his disposal back then. He is the type of player who can have a big impact on a game and whoever ends up facing City will need to do their homework in order to keep the Ghanian international at bay.
