Manchester City managed to grind out an impressive 3-0 victory against a resilient Burnley side at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens came into this game on the back of a 7-2 humiliation of Stoke City and a superb 2-1 win against Napoli in the Champions League. City sat two points clear of rivals Manchester United before this game, who could only get a draw against bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. They also suffered their first defeat of the season as they lost to Huddersfield 2-1 away from home.
The home side opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope was adjudged to have brought down Bernardo Silva in the box. Sergio Aguero, back in the lineup after being involved in a car accident in Amsterdam three weeks ago, stepped up and slotted the ball in to take his all-time City goal tally to 177, equalling Eric Brook’s record.
Despite renewed confidence and resilience from Burnley in the second half, the Citizens weathered the storm and ended the match as a contest when a Leroy Sane corner cross found Nicolas Otamendi for 2-0. It was 3-0 just two minutes later as Kevin De Bruyne fed a precise through-ball to Sane, with the German finishing calmly past Pope to round off a decent performance from the home side.
City showed a different side to them in this game, with key defensive performances from Stones and Otamendi ensuring the home side left the game with a clean sheet against a tough, physical Burnley side.
