After two wins from two in their Champions League group, Manchester City had put themselves in a commanding position to go on and top the group, positioning themselves well for the knockout stages draw.
Standing in their way on Matchday 3 was a high-flying, free-scoring Napoli side that had taken Serie A by storm this season.
Pep Guardiola’s side were undoubtedly set for their toughest test of the group but in the early stages of the game City again blew their opponents away by taking a 2-0 first-half lead courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus.
Ederson’s fine penalty save before half-time kept the score as it was entering the break but he was unable to keep out Amadou Diawara’s second-half spot-kick, but City held on for the three points, making them just one of five teams to have a 100% record in the Champions League groups.
