Manchester City were denied a place in the FA Cup final after they were narrowly beaten by Arsenal 2-1 in extra time at Wembley Stadium, which means Pep Guardiola will finish his first season without a trophy for the Citizens.
City came into the game on the back of two crucial wins in the Premier League whereas Arsenal have been on a terrible run of form recently, and only managed to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 last time out, so City would have been feeling a bit more confident going into this game.
The first half was dominated by City, despite losing David Silva to injury early on. City had a goal wrongfully disallowed when Leroy Sane’s cross was adjudged to have gone out of bounds before Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling combined to put the ball in the net. Arsenal also had a goal rightfully disallowed for offside.
After the break, City took the lead through Aguero after he raced clear of Nacho Monreal and calmy finished past Petr Cech to give. Monreal bounced back from his previous mistake to volley in an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross 11 minutes later.
Yaya Toure and Fernandinho both hit the woodwork as City looked to regain the lead. It wasn’t enough as Arsenal capitalised on City’s failed attempt to clear a Mesut Ozil free-kick in extra time, as Alexis Sanchez pounced to give Arsene Wenger the opportunity to win his 7th FA Cup whilst managing Arsenal, and confine Guardiola to his first ever trophyless season as a manager.
