The Pep Guardiola era started with a win, but City left it late to overcome a resolute Sunderland outfit on a Saturday evening full of intrigue.
It was a perfect start for City; the revitalised Raheem Sterling broke free down the right hand side before being scythed down by Patrick Van Aanholt. Penalty. Who else but Sergio Aguero to smash in beyond the despairing reach of Vito Mannone.
Although completely dominant in possession, City struggled to create a plethora clear cut openings, and unsurprisingly, Sunderland drew level.
Jermain Defoe had been excellently denied by Willy Caballero in the first half, but the former Spurs man needed just one more chance to turn the tables as he equalised with 20 minutes left.
It was an all too familiar sight for City fans, with many of the previous year’s frailties rearing their ugly heads.
Frustration soon turned to elation, however, as Jesus Navas delivered a teasing cross between goalkeeper and defenders. Sunderland debutant Paddy McNair could only turn the ball into his own net.
It sealed a deserved victory, but there are many areas for improvement going forward. Join us as we take a look at four discoveries made during yesterday’s season opener.
