Joe Hart wants to follow in Chelsea’s footsteps

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart says Manchester City can follow in Chelsea’s footsteps and go all the way in the Champions League.

In a dismal domestic campaign, Chelsea defied the odds in 2011/12 by lifting the Champions League trophy against Bayern Munich following a penalty shoot-out victory at the Allianz Arena.

City are in a similar position and currently lie in fourth position in the Premier League. But they are the only English side remaining in the Champions League and Joe Hart believes they can win the coveted prize.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said:

We have to believe we can win it – everything is possible. We’ve seen it over the years when the teams that have won it have played scintillating football, or been fantastic.

But also over the years people have not necessarily set the world alight and they’ve won it. We are certainly not setting the world alight but we are more than capable of winning it.

City reached the quarter finals for the first time with a 3-1 aggregate win over Dynamo Kiev in the last 16. The Blues endured a tough time in their first couple of European campaigns but have gradually improved in the Champions League.

Hart, one of City’s top performers in the competition, says City are always learning in the competition after their early blips.

I think we were pretty naive over the early years. We went in presuming that because we are quite a good team and quite well established in the Premier League that it would be easy, but it’s not. We are definitely learning but this tournament is, as it’s proven for us over the years, not easy to progress in.
